Wagner Brewing Co. is now open. Bill Wagner's vision evolved over years of watching his vineyard and winery team enjoy beer, particularly during harvest. Planning and construction for the micro brewery began in 1995 and the brewery opened in August 1997. The brewery is located in a building adjoining the octagonal winery building. Visitors can follow a self-guided tour of the brewery, learn about the brewing process and the different styles of beer, and sample the brews.
The brewhouse at Wagner's is a 20-barrel German-style "three vessel brewhouse" constructed by Heavy Duty Products, a Canadian company. The brewhouse consists of the mash mixer/kettle, lauter tun and the whirlpool (the three vessels). It has a capacity of 3,500 barrels per year. (A barrel = approximately 31 gallons.)
Brewmaster Andrew Cummings produces both lagers and ales--six different brews, plus seasonal beers throughout the year: Grace House Honey Wheat, Mill Street Pilsner, Dockside Amber Lager, Seneca Trail Pale Ale, Captain Curry's ESB (Extra Special Bitter), and Caywood Station Stout. The beer is bottled under the name Wagner Valley. Visitors to the micro brewery can taste each of the six beers along with any seasonal beers available. Descriptions of our micro brewed beers are on our beer list.
